Yesterday I posted about Coralie Bickford-Smith’s beautiful covers for Penguin’s Great Food series. Bickford-Smith has also created many other visually striking book cover designs for Penguin, from the starkly dramatic Gothic Horror collection to the cheeky, retro Boys’ Adventure series. Her work combines a clean, modern graphic design sensibility and offbeat, old-fashioned patterns and design elements.

mike kelley’s “kandors” glass art

Artist Mike Kelley’s new book “Kandors” chronicles his decade of work creating and recreating images of Kandor. Kandor, for non-Superman fans (that includes me—Batman forever!), is the former Kryptonian capital, shrunk and placed in a bell jar by a villain. Inspired by this story, Kelley creates installations using colorful hand-blown glass bottles and bell jars.

firework studies by pierre le hors

I was organizing my bookmarks (a great way to avoid GRE studying) yesterday, and I came across Pierre Le Hors’ Firework Studies (2009). I initially thought these were pastel drawings, but they’re actually photographs. Le Hors digitally manipulated the photos to achieve a raw, often abstracted look.

Now, she’s created gorgeous covers for Penguin’s new Great Food series, a collection of 20 books representing “the finest food writing from the last 400 years.”

gorgeous and creepy literary perfume bottles

This collection of men’s fragrance bottles by Ah&Oh Studio is both disturbing and beautiful. The designers, inspired by iconic authors and their works, “tried to describe the dark sides of men’s nature.” I love the fluid look of the bottles—so tactile! They were designed to evoke old glass perfume bottles and inkwells.
