one square mile, 10,000 voices
During World War II, more than 10,000 Japanese Americans were unjustly incarcerated at Manzanar (now a national historic site). This audio augmented reality experience geolocates recordings from Manzanar’s past and present around the physical landscape. Using a mobile app, visitors can explore the site while listening to its stories. They are also invited to record their own reflections to add to the project, creating a living document of resistance, resilience, and community.
Onsite installations coming in 2020; virtual experience available at onesquaremile.fm.
